its now easy being green
At massapeel we don’t profess to being perfect when it comes to being green, but we certainly do our part to ease the strain off this poor, withered globe. How? Purely out of necessity. Our whole business is predicated on having low to zero waste. When we buy fruit, we use all of it, yes all of it, the peel, the pulp, the precious juice locked inside. When that process is done and our bottles are full, we take the excess “waste” and turn it into delicious salt – perfect for seasoning and salt rims on our signature margaritas. Personally, I put it on popcorn but we’re straying off topic now.
Moving on… let’s break down our carbon footprint next to other juice companies. First of all, what is a carbon footprint?
“The carbon footprint (or greenhouse gas footprint) serves as an indicator to compare the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted from an activity, product, company or country. Carbon footprints are usually reported in tons of emissions (CO2-equivalent) per unit of comparison; such as per year, person, kg protein, km travelled and alike. For a product, its carbon footprint includes the emissions for the entire life cycle from the production along the supply chain to its final consumption and disposal.”
Thank you wikipedia! Now let’s break this down further. For our purposes the unit of comparison is in kilograms. All things being equal, we’ll assume that we are all getting our fruit from the same place (the Ontario Food Terminal in Etobicoke – just 8.3 kilometres from massapeel headquarters) and that carbon footprint stands at around 14882 kg per box of fruit before it reaches our hands. However, because we use LESS fruit to make MORE juice, our carbon footprint is around 232 kg per 2 litres of juice made. Compare that to straight up juicing which comes to about 4252 kg per 2 liters. That means our competitors’ carbon footprint is 18 times the size of ours. Now because we’re local, we do most of our deliveries by either the good ol’ TTC or ol’ fashioned bicycle (my bike is rather old). When you add it up, it’s really a wonder our jealous competitors don’t run us down with their trucks.
Furthermore (yes! we go further!) massapeel can also help your business cut down on waste too. If you sign up for our Citrus Saver Program, allowing us to take the naked, zested oranges off your hands we’ll give you $.30 per orange off every 2 litre bottle of our patented Mandarin Orange cocktail mix. We take your oranges for free and sell them back to you in juice form (thank you and you’re welcome). Our bottles are made from hdpe 2 plastic which means it can be used up to 10 times before it needs to be sent off to the recycling plant. We therefore encourage you to save your bottles so we can grab them, power-wash and reuse them. And we’ll take $.50 off your next order for every bottle we get back. Who benefits? We all do!
